— Iker Casillas (@IkerCasillas) April 19, 2023

For many Madridistas, Iker Casillas is undisputedly real Madrid’s top goalkeeper. The official website of the club declares him to be”the “best goalkeeper in Real Madrid’s history. And the history of Spanish football. With the number of top goalies who have been part of the Blancos throughout their 119-year history. And the fact that his praise is a lot of weight. An enormous weight.

In the beginning, as a backup for German legend bodo illgner. Casillas was able to take the start from Illgner in his 1999/2000 campaign. Except for an unofficial reserve stint in 2001-02, the young Spaniard did not look back.

A skilled and efficient shot-stopper antoni ramallet’s time as fc Barcelona’s most successful goalkeeper. It was the first time sustained dominance in the domestic arena. He was a Barcelona native and was relegated to the Catalan club from rcd Mallorca in 1946.

Ramallets was initially signed to be a substitute for Juan Zambudio Velasco. But due to Velasco’s eye injury in the year 1949, ramallets was elevated to start tasks. With Ramallets as the starting goalie, Barcelona went on a title streak that saw them win among other trophies the four La Liga titles, It has four Copas del Generalissimo (now known as the Copa del Rey) between 1951 to 1960.

5. Víctor valdés (spain; fc barcelona)

Feliz Año para todos espero que este 2011 este lleno de alegria y felicidad para todos

— Victor Valdes (@Valdes_victor) December 31, 2010

Have you ever seen a goalkeeper who provoked more opposing reactions to his skills than victor valdes? But some believe that Valdes is undervalued he was insecure, and was secured from the FC Barcelona team that was far superior to the team he played for.

But some claim that Valdes was a crucial part of Barcelona’s elite teams in the early 2000s and into the 2010s. That no other goalie could have suited Barcelona’s tiki-taka ethos in the way he did, and that he is a Barcelona legend.

There is no doubt that Valdes was more susceptible to errors in big games than the average goalie of top quality. I think it’s also appropriate to mention that he was part of a historic Barcelona generation that included a formidable threesome comprising Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and Andres Iniesta, to name a few.

4. Francisco buyo (spain; sevilla fc and real madrid)

A former Real Madrid coach Leo Beenhakker once stated about Francisco Buyo: “Spanish football is safe with buyo in goal. It’s very high praise for a goalkeeper who started his career at the bottom of the division.

In 1980, a young 22-year-old buyo had his La Liga debut with sevilla fc and was promoted to the starting line-up shortly following his debut. He had at least 30 La Liga appearances in each of the six seasons in Seville and helped the club climb up to fifth in La Liga.

The performances of Buyo caught the interest of Real Madrid, who signed the goalkeeper to replace miguel angel gonzalez Suarez in 1986. Despite competition against jose manuel ochotorena and Agustin rodriguez santiago, buyo retained Real Madrid’s starting spot for 11 consecutive seasons – testimony to his consistency and reliability.

3. Santiago canizares (spain; rc celta de vigo, real madrid and valencia cf)

— SANTIAGO CAÑIZARES (@santicanizares) April 17, 2023

For many la liga fans of the 1990s and 2000s, it’s nearly impossible to discuss goalkeepers in the league without including the blonde-haired shot-stopper known as Santiago Canizares. Canizares was expected to be a top goalie. He was a co-winner of the Ricardo zmora trophy during his first La Liga season with rc Celta de Vigo in 1993.

Then, he was signed by Real Madrid — the club where he had spent his formative years in 1994. But, it was at Valencia cf, which he joined in 1998, where he realized his full potential. Canizares had 305 league games for Valencia during a 10-year period from 1998-2008, a record for a goalkeeper at the club.

2. Luis arconada (spain; real sociedad)

What iker casillas represents to Spanish supporters today, Luis Arconada was to the same fans throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Arconada has been mentioned as a source of inspiration by a variety of Spanish goalkeepers, such as Casillas along with Sevilla’s legendary Andres Pop due to his achievements in the national team as well as at La Liga.

He was nicknamed “the octopus due to his amazing shot-stopping abilities and rebound control arconada played in a total of 414 La Liga appearances for the san sebastian-based team in 1974 between 1974 and 1989. In that span, the goalkeeper established his position among Spain’s best goalkeepers by winning three consecutive Ricardo Zamora trophy victories in 1979 between 1979 and 1981.

— The League Magazine (@Theleaguemag) March 12, 2023

Ricardo Zamora is one of the best goalkeepers ever. According to many opinion pieces -including mine, he is the most successful goalie since Iker Casillas. There is a reason the most prestigious goalkeeper award in Spain is named in his honor.

Additionally, since I am only considering la liga performances (i.e., Performances before the league’s founding in 1929), the majority of Zamora’s professional career and even the entirety of his fc barcelona career — is not accessible. This affects Zamora’s status from the La Liga perspective.
