It’s interesting to note that Messi and Ronaldo have somewhat different free-kick histories. Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are considered by many to be the greatest football players of all time, and they differ greatly in their primary characteristics. Additionally, their track record for scoring free kicks is very different, and the public’s view of them is rather inaccurate.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of the world’s greatest free-kick experts. When it comes to their free-kick conversion rate, though, the two players’ paths have diverged. Cristiano Ronaldo gained fame early in his career for his incredible goals scored from dead-ball situations.

Who is better at free kicks Messi or Ronaldo?

During his time at Manchester United, Ronaldo immediately gained notoriety for scoring some rather incredible goals from free kicks; in fact, his first goal for the team came from a free kick. A few years later, he scored against Portsmouth which will never be forgotten, coining the term “knuckleball,”.

He scored five free-kick goals in each of his final two seasons as a Manchester United player. He carried over this deadball form onto La Liga, where he scored twenty-three direct free-kick goals in his first five seasons.

Messi’s path has been nearly the complete reverse of Ronaldo’s. When Messi passed Ronaldo on 30 goals in March 2012, he had only scored 5 goals from free kicks, making him Barcelona’s all-time top scorer. Then, Messi’s life took a turn for the better. He went on to score seven goals in 2012 alone, and for the next seven years, he averaged six goals from free kicks annually.

He scored eight free kicks in 2019 after managing to score ten in a single year in 2018. Messi scored 65 free-kick goals in total and Ronaldo scored 61 career goals. To illustrate how unlike their paths to these totals have been, Messi only had 14 free-kick goals at the end of 2013, compared to Ronaldo’s 39! Comparably, between 2017 and 2019, Messi recorded 23 goals from free kicks to Ronaldo’s 5; yet, between 2009 and 2011, Ronaldo recorded 21 goals from direct free kicks to Messi’s 3.
