On Wednesday, the BCCI unveiled the latest player contracts for the Senior Men’s Team India for the season of 2023-24, marking a significant update in the roster. In a move capturing the cricketing world’s attention, youthful prodigy Yashasvi Jaiswal has been elevated to Grade B, joining the ranks of established players. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill and Mohammad Siraj have seen their careers ascend as they are bumped up to Grade A from their previous Grade B standings.

The elite Grade A+ remains unchanged, with cricket heavyweights Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja maintaining their top-tier positions. In contrast, Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant experienced a demotion, sliding down to Grade B from Grade A.

In a surprising turn of events, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were excluded from this year’s contract recommendations, as per a statement from the BCCI.

The announcement also highlighted a fresh influx of talent with Rinku Singh, Tilak Verma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Jitesh Sharma, Mukesh Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, and Rajat Patidar making their debut in the annual retainership. Conversely, the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, Umesh Yadav, Deepak Hooda, and Yuzvendra Chahal, along with Iyer and Kishan, did not make the cut this time around.

Grade C sees the return of Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, Sanju Samson, Arshdeep Singh, and KS Bharat. The BCCI has outlined criteria for automatic inclusion in Grade C, based on participation in a minimum number of international matches, with Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan poised for inclusion pending their participation in an upcoming Test match.

Furthermore, the Selection Committee has put forward names for fast bowling contracts, aiming to bolster the team’s pace attack with fresh talent such as Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal, and Vidwath Kaverappa. The BCCI emphasizes the importance of domestic cricket engagement for athletes during off-seasons from international duties.

The contract list is distinguished by categories, with Grade A+ hosting Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja. Grade A now includes R Ashwin, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Hardik Pandya. Grade B features Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Axar Patel. Finally, a comprehensive roster of 15 athletes fills Grade C, showcasing the depth and diversity of talent within Team India.
