Why Only Iyer and Kishan? 1983 WC Legend Demands Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Join Ranji Trophy Action!

A powerful message was delivered when Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were left off of the yearly contract list by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Ishan Kishan’s withdrawal from the Test series against South Africa sparked the uproar, and India’s coach Rahul Dravid suggested he play some domestic cricket to get back in shape. Remarkably, Kishan chose to train with the Pandya brothers in Baroda rather than represent Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.

In response, all contractual players were given strict instructions by the BCCI to take part in the Ranji Trophy unless they were involved with the national squad. This order was issued following Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from the Test squad for his subpar performance against England and his nonattendance at the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals.

Iyer hasn’t suffered any injuries recently, according to NCA head of sports science Nitin Patel, despite reports of back spasms being sent to the Mumbai Cricket Association. Iyer was available for the semifinal matchup with Tamil Nadu, but the BCCI had already decided to sever ties with him and Kishan, highlighting the fact that players are not allowed to freely select their favorite forms.

Former World Cup winner Kirti Azad supported the BCCI’s position, arguing that elite players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should play domestic cricket in their off-seasons. Azad applauded the move, emphasizing how crucial domestic cricket is to keeping players in shape and connected to the game’s heritage. He claimed that all players who neglect household obligations should be subject to the same rules, criticizing the Iyer and Kishan cases’ selective punishment.

“It is unfair to penalize only two players,” Azad said PTI. “All players should be held accountable for similar actions, guaranteeing equity and consistency in the handling of domestic cricket participation.”
