There have only been two occasions in the history of Test cricket where 23 wickets were lost in the opening five days of a match.

A similar incident occurred on Day 1 of an Australia vs. England match played at Melbourne Ground in 1902 when both sides lost a total of 25 wickets. This was also India’s third two-day Test game; the other two took place in Ahmedabad, in 2021, against England, and in Bengaluru, in 2018 against Afghanistan. The way Bumrah and Siraj understood the pitch served as a reminder of how the modern generation keeps going in the face of crushing setbacks.

One of the greatest records of all time was likely broken after a record-breaking Test match. In Cape Town, the second Test match between South Africa and India finished in all but 107 overs (642 balls), the shortest match in history. Not only did India tie the series 1-1 by winning the Newlands Game by seven wickets, but they also broke their record, which had been 842 balls against England in 2021.

The match broke many records, including India being part of a two-day Test match for the third time. Mohammed Siraj was named player of the match, taking six wickets for 15 runs in the first innings. South African team was bowled out for 55 before lunch on the very first day.  India won the match by seven wickets at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, South Africa. The win drew the series 1-1 and made India the first Asian side to win at Newlands.
