On Sunday, March 3, the Indian men’s cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, secured the top rank in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 point standings. Following Australia’s 172-run victory against New Zealand in their opening Test match at Wellington’s Basin Reserve, which moved them ahead 1-0 in the series, the rankings were adjusted.

Australia’s standout spinner Nathan Lyon, who took six wickets for 65 runs in New Zealand’s second innings, was crucial to the victory. Josh Hazlewood chipped in as well, snagging two wickets. Rachin Ravindra was the most outstanding player for New Zealand, scoring 59 runs off of 105 balls.

Australia’s performance was a major factor in India’s ascent to the top. India will guarantee their place at the top if they win or manage to hold a draw against England in the forthcoming fifth Test in Dharamsala. But a defeat might give Australia and New Zealand a chance to take the lead. Australia and New Zealand will play their final Test match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on March 8.

Here’s a simplified overview of the current standings in the WTC 2023-25 points table:
