Hawk-Eye Creator Blasts Michael Vaughan’s ‘Uneducated’ DRS Remarks: ‘A Disappointing Statement!

There was a lot of discussion over the Decision Review System’s (DRS) transparency and correctness when Joe Root was dismissed during the second innings of the fourth Test match between India and England in Ranchi. The DRS ball-tracking revealed the ball was just about in line, with only a portion of the ball’s center within the legal boundary, which tipped the judgment in India’s favor. Initially, the on-field verdict was “not out,” assuming the ball pitched outside leg. English spectators were upset by this, which is why former cricketer Michael Vaughan suggested that DRS transparency and integrity be preserved by including a camera and microphone behind the scenes.

The creator of Hawk-Eye technology, Paul Hawkins, disapproved of Vaughan’s proposal, calling it ignorant. Hawkins described the painstaking process of configuring the Hawk-Eye system on The Analyst podcast. This included daily measurements of the stumps and modifications for local conditions like Lord’s slope. He emphasized the strict quality control procedures that are in place to guarantee the correctness of the technology without jeopardizing intellectual property, such as the automatic screengrabs of the tracking system that are transmitted to the ICC for internal assessment.

Hawkins expressed concern with Vaughan’s words and emphasized the need for well-informed opinion. While applauding Vaughan’s abilities as a cricket player and commentator, he demanded more ethical journalism. In an effort to inform the cricketing community with factual content, Hawkins contended that in addition to Hawk-Eye’s responsibility to provide accurate information, journalists and commentators should also make sure their criticisms and recommendations are grounded in a deep comprehension of the technology and its workings.
