The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly considering Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami as a candidate for the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. Shami, known for his cricketing achievements and currently playing domestic cricket for Bengal, has not yet decided on the BJP’s proposal.

This move is seen as a strategy by the BJP to strengthen its position in minority-dominated areas of Bengal, particularly by aiming for Shami to represent the Basirhat constituency, which has been a focal point of political attention due to recent incidents of violence in Sandeshkhali.

Shami, 33, is currently recuperating from surgery and has been away from international cricket following his contribution to India’s journey to the ODI World Cup 2023 final. His performance in the tournament was noteworthy, securing 24 wickets in seven matches.

Post the World Cup, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Indian cricket team, specifically acknowledging Shami’s efforts throughout the tournament. The BJP’s potential nomination of Shami highlights the party’s strategy to leverage popular figures in sports to influence electoral outcomes in key constituencies.
